Now if we were to change the rules of the boxing match to relate it more to forex trading , so let say there is now a large group of people betting on the boxing match against a market . but not on who wins but how many punches are thrown in two minutess short or ten minutes long . friend A bets on there being 30 punches thrown in two minutes against the market friend B bets on 150 punches thrown it ten minutes . Both player A and player B get it right so they both win $1000 So in this scenario no one had to lose for some one to win .

Now let’s relate this notion to the currency market; suppose you enter a short position on AUD/USD then another trader takes a long position AUD/USD . The broker simply matches the orders and collects the difference between the buy quote and the sell quote or spread as it as also know by . This is exactly what the broker wants, to keep the entire spread and maintain a flat position.

So we saw in that other example that two traders can win and of course two traders can lose too. One may take a profit in a short period where as the other trader may hang on to a rise trend and cash in on a winning trader later.

Now lets look at traders that make mostly losing trades make little or no profits over months of trading. What most of these traders have in common is that they are highly speculative and they have no plan . Effectively these traders are gambling and frankly have no interest in putting in the time and effort to learn about the FOREX market and monitor the trends. Of course greed and other negative emotions can play havoc with those using the FOREX market.

So to answer the question is FOREX trading a zero sum game , you would have to say yes because there are constantly winners and losers .However there is nothing stopping you from being on the winning trend with the right long term plan and tools .
