Billie Holiday statue finally gets finishing touches

When Baltimore sculptor James Earl Reid created the city’s first memorial to the stunningly gifted jazz singer Billie Holiday in 1985, something was missing. Gone were the panels containing references to the Jim Crow era and the lynching that Holiday so chillingly recounted in the ballad “Strange Fruit.”

Now Reid has a chance to remedy what he calls censorship by city officials, by adding the bronze panels for today’s rededication of the statue on the 50th anniversary of her death.

What Affects the FOREX Market

Future

This is similar to the Futures trade which takes place in the stock market. This involves standard contracts which often have maturity dates. The contract will state how much currency is to be exchanged on which date and at which rate. There are often special exchanges for these trades. The contracts also often include interest costs.

Swap

This is a very unique type of a forex transaction. In this, two parties decide to exchange currencies with each other for a pre-agreed length of time and then agree to reverse the transaction at a future date.

Option

This again is similar to the Options trade in the stock market. In this transaction, the owner of the transaction can exchange currency at a pre-agreed rate on a pre-agreed date. This is an option, a right, but not an obligation of the Option owner.

Savings Emptied, Unemployment Checks Exhausted

Background: Rose lives alone in his District condominium. He was earning $85,000 a year as a communications director for a nonprofit organization until it lost funding and had to downsize. An extended period of joblessness ate away at his savings, forcing him to file for unemployment. The unemployment checks barely cover his basic needs.

Update: With Rose, it’s one step forward and two steps back. He was offered a communications position, but the deal was dependent on him getting security clearance. Because the full process can take weeks, even months, Rose applied for interim clearance and was denied. The company said it would try to keep his application open should his full clearance come through, but another person was offered the position.

Rose received his last unemployment check on May 16. He’s hoping for another extension. He’s still trying to find full-time employment.
